Incidents Involving Fake Pot on the Rise in Sioux Falls

Dec 29, 2011

The Sioux Falls, South Dakota, area is seeing a boom in the use of synthetic marijuana and bath salts. Just recently there, an 18-year-old man under the influence of synthetic marijuana crashed his SUV into eight other vehicles in a store parking lot before colliding with the store. In light of this incident, local Police Detective Darin Pedneau explains that part of the danger of synthetic marijuana is that "you don't know how the user is going to react.” While some users “have a bad reaction,” some “have a barely noticeable reaction similar to THC,” a chemical ingredient in marijuana.

In spite of state and federal efforts to ban synthetic marijuana and bath salts, Pedneau thinks these chemicals will be around for a while. He explains that companies manufacturing synthetic marijuana continue to stay one step ahead of the law by changing its composition; that selling the drug is extremely lucrative; and that it’s easy for users to access the drug.
